ÖVP and Greens have launched new measures for sustainability. The disposal of food should be prohibited.
Around one third of the food produced worldwide is lost. In Austria, too, hundreds of thousands of tons of food, which would still be suitable for consumption, end up in the trash every year.
The governing parties ÖVP and the Greens presented a resolution on a comprehensive action plan against food waste to the Consumer Protection Committee on Tuesday, which was unanimously adopted.
Specifically, the action plan, which is anchored in the government program and is being developed in cooperation with Austrian retailers, producers and charitable organizations, should also include a ban on the disposal of food fit for human consumption from food retailers. With such a model, France has been successful in the fight against food waste for about four years. In addition, the resolution on the action plan provides for the following points:
- the evaluation of existing laws and support systems
- a national coordinating body
- Improving the data basis and transparency across the entire value chain
- a consumer awareness campaign to reduce waste in households
The increasing amount of food waste is polluting our environment and fueling the climate crisis. Avoiding waste is therefore also a decisive step towards climate protection. After all, global food waste is one of the third largest producers of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
